Monarques

The rollicking pop songs of Monarques—the new venture for Oh Captain, My Captain’s Josh Spacek—don’t sound like they belong in the 21st century. On its debut self-titled EP, the band mines the piano-led luster of classic rock ‘n’ roll from the 1950s, coming off like Buddy Holly collaborating with Beulah. Spacek’s croon is perfect on tracks like the bouncing “Oh No,” and provides just enough drama to slower numbers like “Cold Cold Heart.” The Monarques have only been playing shows since September, so the fact that the band already has such a defined aesthetic is proof that sometimes all you need is a good song or two. – Michael Mannheimer- Willamette Week
