MFNW, The Gories, Dantes

[MAKING UP NEVER FELT SO GOOD] Detroit natives the Gories have reunited for a limited number of tour dates that include a MFNW lineup with San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees on Sept. 10 in downtown Portland.

The Gories were formed in 1986 over a six-pack of Budweiser; members Mick Collins, Dan Kroha and Peggy O’Neill produced three albums before their infamous breakup in 1992. While these bass-less wonders went on to form bands like Blacktop, the Dirtbombs and Demolition Doll Rods, their rhythmic anthems continued to haunt other no-frills Detroit bands like the White Stripes.

In the fall of 2008, rumors of the Gories’ reconciliation began to circulate on blogs and then were finally confirmed by Greg Cartwright of the Oblivians when he announced shows in Detroit, Memphis and Europe throughout the summer of 2009 that would headline both bands. Detroit’s Metro Times commemorated the reunion and celebrated the Gories’ influence on rock ‘n’ roll in a story that dissected what came after the band’s breakup. The story quoted Collins: “Whether I like it or not, the knowledge of everything that came in the wake of the Gories has a lot to be said for it. In our own small way, we helped change the course of Western civilization.”

Be sure to check out the Gories and Thee Oh Sees at MusicfestNW on Sept. 10 at Dante’s.
